Tony Hughes achieves career best finish at Ginetta G50 Cup

Winner!

Winner!

Last weekend saw a fantastic set of results for Speedworks Motorsport – trophies and a best ever finish for Tony Hughes at Rockingham, qualifying in 12th place.

Race 1 on Saturday afternoon saw the team field 3 of it’s regular cars, Tony having a great battle to finish in 11th position.

Sunday morning saw bright sunshine and two more races to run. The start of Race 2 was a rather torrid affair with a spinner at the second corner taking out 4 cars, but the race settled down and saw Tony have his best ever finish in 6th place. He  took his maiden podium to win the Chairmans Cup category and achieve fastest lap in the class!

Race 3 saw another corner collision which saw Tony take the unfortunate turn of collecting the spinning car but even this could not dampen his sprits as Speedworks brought home 4 trophies, with 3 class wins and a 3rd overall.

Tony’s next round of the G50 Cup is Brands Hatch on the 4th/5th October.

We will keep you updated on Tony’s progress!

Racing realities – the ups and downs

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Managing Director of Hughes Safety Showers, Tony Hughes blogs on the realities of his other major passion, racing as a member of the G50 Cup Team Champions.

Last year was the debut season for the the Ginetta G50 Championship and I managed to drive in all 10 races.

It was a support race for GT Cars, Formula Ford and Formula 3. This year it takes a step up and becomes a support race for the British Touring Car Championship which attracts 30,000 plus crowds and live TV coverage at circuits such as Brands Hatch, Oulton Park and Silverstone.

Tony started the year well by taking second place in the gruelling Sebring Challenge in Florida

This year, I’ve cut back to 5 drives in the Championship so that I can drive on some of the classic race circuits around the world.

We did Sebring earlier in the year and hopefully have Daytona lined up for November.

Of course, I’ll still be pushing hard in the Ginetta G50 Championship.

Anyone who was at Oulton Park on 31st May or watched the race on TV will know it can get a little hairy.

Quick reactions are vital to keep out of trouble.

For a driver’s view check out the footage from my on board camera. Sit tight, strap yourself in and wait for the action.
